There are different ways you can pay to use public transit. The cash fare is $3.00 for an adult (as of Aug. 2014) - exact fare and coins only on buses. One day, three day, weekend and evening passes are also available. There is a reduced fare for children, students and people over 65. Check the STM 's web site in the Fare information section for up to date prices and information.

If you plan an extended stay in Montreal, you might want to purchase an Opus card ($6.00, as of Aug. 2014). It's a universal smart card that can be "recharged" at metro stations and some other locations. It's the same card that is used by the different transit authorities in the region. You can use this card to buy individual trips, 10 trips for $25.50 or weekly and monthly passes.

All types of fares can be purchased at metro stations and in some convenience stores and drugstores.
