By bicycle or rollerblades

Montreal has a large network of bicycle paths (you could ride all around the entire island if you want). There are paths in almost all districts (it's the best way to visit the Plateau Mont-Royal district). Vélo-Québec (a local bicycle rights association) puts out a complete guide of these paths with maps (Éditions Tricycle). You can find it at most book stores and at its headquarter (1251 Rachel street east, on the other side of the street from Lafontaine park in the Plateau Mont-Royal district, tel.: (514) 521-8356) or check out their web site. Visiting their headquarters is a good idea, there's a boutique, information kiosk and the Café Bicycletta. Roller blades are very popular here and are tolerated in bike paths (but it is recommended that you only roller blade in parks or in the old port). You can't ride your bicycle or roller blade on sidewalks tough. You can rent bicycles or roller blades at various locations around town (in or near the old port on de la Commune street for example). I'll get more specific addresses later.
