Sales tax

Almost everything is taxed in Quebec. There is a 5% goods and services tax (GST) and a 9.975% Québec sales tax (QST). The combined rate of 14.975% is added to the price of your purchases. There are a few exceptions. As a general rule, groceries are not taxed (except for ready-to-eat, packaged foods, such as chips and candy). Books are only taxed the 5% GST. But, to go into the weird and convoluted logic of tax policy, and which particular goods are taxed and which are not, is beyond the scope of this guide (and way beyond the scope of my understanding!). So, rule of thumb, just about everything is taxed!
