Romantic Montreal
It all depends on your definition of "romantic". I'll just use to usual definition so don't look for anything terribly original. Here's a couple of suggestions for romantic activities :
- There are dinner cruises on the St-Laurent river starting from the old port in old Montreal. The best known is the Bateau Mouche dinner cruises (only at night). The Bateau Mouche is "Paris-style" boat with a glass roof, there's a main deck (less expensive, around $60 per person) and an upper deck (more expensive but the menu is different, around $85). The tour is 3 hours and a half long and there's on board entertainment. For more information, you can visit their web site (you can even see the menu). There's another cruise called the "New Orleans Cruise" which is a replica of a Mississipi river boat, they also serve a 5 service dinner. For information on this and other cruises, you can visit the old port's web site.
- A calèche ride (horse-drawn carriage) in old Montreal? Not a very original suggestion but it can be done... but at night, there are too many people around during the day to make it interesting. I wouldn't count on it to be informative, some calèche drivers do not know too much about Montreal's history or tend to exaggerate. I suggest instead a dinner and a play (ok, it's not original either) : you can start by dinner at an old Montreal restaurant (Stash or Le Petit Moulinsart for example) then go to a play at the Centaur Theater (english language theater at 453 St-François-Xavier street just south of Notre-Dame street, tel.:288-3161), and finally for a great intimate jazz club, go to L'Air du Temps.
- A picnic on the Mont-Royal park or on Ile Ste-Hélène during the day (not at night, you could get lost and eating in the dark is not that fun). There are picnic tables around but you can just lay down a blanket and eat anywhere you want. You can buy your food at the Jean-Talon market in Little Italy or at the Faubourg Ste-Catherine downtown (getting the food is half the fun)
