There are many museums in Montreal, presenting permanent and temporary exhibitions on various subjects ranging from art, history, science, etc. At last count, there's about twelve art museums, eleven science museums and about fiftheen history museums as well as other small museums and exhibitions. The best known Montreal museum is the Musée des Beaux Arts-Museum of Fine Arts (museum of fine arts downtown) and the newest is the Centre des sciences de Montreal (iSci) (interactive science center in the old port).

There are also various art galleries that you can visit freely and Montreal's "maisons de la culture". The "maisons de la culture" (or culture houses), which are funded by the city, are located in different neighborhoods and present plays, concerts and many free exhibitions.
