Movie theatres
To make it a little easier to chose a place to see those films, here's a commented list of movie theaters and other information:
-
Megaplexes : There are a couple of new mega-movie-theatres that have been build (around 2000-2001). The Cinéma Quartier Latin (corner of St-Denis and Émery, the main entrance is on Émery, Berri-UQAM metro station; there's a parking lot underneath the theatre) has 17 screens. The Pepsi Forum (I guess they couldn't pick an uglier name) is built in the old Canadien hockey forum and is managed by AMC and has 22 screens and other forms of entertainement (corner of Atwater and Ste-Catherine street west, Atwater metro station). There's also the Cinéma Banque Scotia Montréal (aka the Paramount) which is built in the old Simpson building, it has 12 screens with an IMAX theatre (corner of Ste-Catherine west and Metcalfe, McGill metro station).
- Closed theaters: the Complexe Desjardins, the Berri, the Cineplex Centre-Ville, the Egyptien in the Cours Mont-Royal, the Cinema de Paris (they moved to the Cinema du Parc), the Palace and the Loews have all closed down recently (2001) mostly due to the construction of the Paramount and Quartier latin with have more than dozen screens each. The Parisien has closed late 2007.
- Cinéma du Parc (3575 du Parc ave. corner of Prince-Arthur and du Parc ave. downtown in the La Cité underground shopping complex, Place-des-Arts metro station then take the 80 bus north, tel.: 281-1900): one of the best place to watch films in Montreal. They have a good selection of cult movies, movie classics and international independant productions. The movie goers there seem to respect movies a little more since it is very rare to hear people talking during the movies or munching on snacks (well, at least that has been my experience).
Ticket prices are between $7.00 and $10 for adults, there's a card that gives you access to 8 movies for 40$ (which comes to $5.00 a movie). Check out the web site for up to date information and schedules.
- Imperial (1432 Bleury street just north of Ste-Catherine street, next to the Place-des-Arts metro station's Bleury exit, tel.: 848-7187) : a grand movie theater with a beautiful interior, it was restored in the mid-80's. It was recently given over to the Montreal International Film Festival, it is use for film festivals, premieres and they show some independant films.
- Quartier latin (St-Denis street corner of Émery, just north of de Maisonneuve blvd. in the Latin quarter, Berri-UQAM metro station), it's the new state-of-the-art 17 screen movie theatre that has just opened. They show french films (translations or original french productions) only. Altough each room is relatively small, the screens are big and curved inward (almost IMAX-like) and the seats are big and comfortable (stadium seating so that the people in front of you aren't in the way). There's also a food court, an arcade and a bar (yes, a real bar in a movie theatre). the ticket price is a little above average but it's still half off in the afternoon and on Tuesdays. By the way, there's a parking lot underneath the theatre but it's close to the subway station anyway.
- Parisien (480 Ste-Catherine street west corner of City Councillors downtown, McGill metro station, CLOSED) : it use to be one of those great looking movie theatres when it was called the Princess but it was gutted out in the 80's to make room for a multiplex. It was the main theater where they showed films from the Montreal International Film Festival. It closed late 2007.
- Ex-Centris (3536 St-Laurent boul., St-Laurent metro station then take 55 bus north, tel.: 847-2206) it can be best described as a multimedia, experimental and independant cinema complex (it use to be the mission of the Cinéma Parallèle which has merged its operation with the complex). Buying a ticket there is an experience in itself.
-
Cinémathèque québécoise (335 de Maisonneuve blvd. east just west of St-Denis in the Latin quarter, Berri-UQAM metro station, tel.: 842-9763) : the cinémathèque is part museum, part movie theater and part research and teaching place for film students. There's a small screen over the main entrance that shows continuous films and a outside "frosted" glass wall where movies are projected. Click here to get more information on the cinémathèque.
- National Film Board/Office Nationale du Film (1564 St-Denis street, corner of de Maisonneuve blvd. in the Latin quarter, Berri-UQAM metro station, tel.: 496-6895) : it's the canadian film board main office where there's a theater, a gift shop and the cinérobothèque where you can order films via a touchscreen and a robotic arm fetches it for you and puts in a laser disc player, you can then control the movie or documentaries with the controls on the screen.
