Theatre and dance

Here's a short list of (english or french language) theatres. These are only the better known theatres, there are a lot more (smaller) theatres and companies around town. You can click on their name (if there's a link) to go to the their web site. The rideau web site (in french) gives a complete list of theaters and plays currently being presented. There is an english language equivalent, the Quebec Drama Federation has a list of theaters and the Playwrights' Worshop Montreal has some theater links.
  • Centaur Theatre : the main english language theater in Montreal which presents mostly classic and contemporary plays. It is located at 453 St-François-Xavier street, just south of Notre-Dame street in old Montreal (Place-d'Armes metro station). It's in a beautiful building that use to the Montreal's stock exchange. The tickets are reasonably priced (less then $30). Tel.: 514-288-3161.

  • Saidye Bronfman Center for the Arts : this theater/cultural center presents plays in english, hebrew and yiddish. It is located at 5170 Côtes-Ste-Catherine road, corner of Mountain Sights in the Côtes-des-Neiges district (Côtes-Ste-Catherine metro station). Tel.: 514-739-230.

  • Shakespeare in the park and the Fringe festival are two outdoor and free english theater events, the first is held in late summer (usually in August, check local papers for a full schedule) at various parks in the city (usually at Westmount and Mont-Royal parks) the second is held in early June on the McGill university campus and is part of the worldwide alternative theater Fringe festival circuit.

  • Théâtre du Nouveau Monde (TNM), one of the main french language theater in Montreal, it presents mostly classic plays. It has been recently completely renovated. The whole exterior has been redone and a restaurant/café was added on the ground floor with a terrasse. It is located at 84 Ste-Catherine street west corner of St-Urbain, dowtown (Place-des-Arts metro station). Tel.: 514-866-8668.

  • Place-des-Arts : there many theaters in Place-des-Arts presenting plays, shows, musicals and concerts. The plays are mostly contemporary and in french but you can also see "big" musicals and lectures in english. The Compagnie Jean-Duceppe has has its permanent home there. It is located on Ste-Catherine street, between Jeanne-Mance and St-Urbain, dowtown (Place-des-Arts metro station).

  • Théâtre de Quat'Sous : named after Bertold Brech "Opéra des Quat'Sous", it is a small theater presenting french language contemporary plays. It is located at 100 des Pins ave. just east of St-Laurent blvd. in the Quartier latin district. Tel.: 514-845-7277.

  • Théâtre du Rideau Vert : presents french language contemporary plays at 4664 St-Denis street south of St-Joseph blvd. in the Plateau Mont-Royal district, Laurier metro station. Tel.: 514-844-1793.

  • Théâtre Denise-Pelletier : presents popular french language plays, In the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district. Located at 4353 Ste-Catherine street east. Tel.: 514-253-8974.

  • Espace GO : presents experimental plays and modern dance shows. Located at 4890 St-Laurent blvd. just south of St-Joseph street. Tel.: 514-845-4890.

  • Usine C : it's the Carbone 14 company's theater located in a recycled factory that use to make jams. They present experimental plays and modern dance shows. It's located at 1345 Lalonde, just south of Ontario street in the village. Tel.: 514-521-4493.

  • Espace la Veillée : small theater that presents french language experimental plays. Located at 1371 Ontario street east, in the village. Tel.: 514-526-7288 or 514-526-6582.
